Time management is a critical skill for achieving a high score in the IELTS reading test. For candidates who have already scored 6.5 in the exam and are looking to improve, managing your time wisely can make a significant difference. In this article, we’ll explore some strategies on how to manage your time during the IELTS reading test and improve your chances of scoring 7+.
1. Know the Test Structure
The IELTS reading test consists of three sections, each with a different number of questions. You have 60 minutes to complete all three sections, which means you should spend roughly 20 minutes on each section. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the test format and the types of questions you may encounter.
2. Skim and Scan
One of the most effective ways to manage your time in the reading test is by practicing the techniques of skimming and scanning. Skimming allows you to get a general idea of the content by reading the first and last paragraphs of each section, while scanning helps you find specific information quickly.
Skimming: Quickly read the first and last sentences of each paragraph to get the main idea.
Scanning: Look for keywords and numbers related to the questions without reading the entire passage.
These techniques will help you answer questions faster and more accurately.
3. Don’t Get Stuck on Difficult Questions
In the IELTS reading test, some questions may be more challenging than others. If you find yourself struggling with a question, don’t waste too much time on it. Move on to the next one and come back to it later if you have time. Your goal is to answer as many questions as possible within the time limit.
4. Practice with Timed Tests
The more you practice, the better you’ll get at managing your time. Set a timer when practicing reading passages to simulate test conditions. By doing this regularly, you will develop a sense of how long it takes to complete each section and be able to adjust your pace accordingly.
5. Highlight Keywords
In the reading test, it’s essential to highlight important keywords while reading. This will help you quickly locate relevant information when answering the questions. For example, if you’re looking for an answer about a date or a place, underline those terms while reading the passage.
6. Avoid Spending Too Much Time on One Passage
If you find a passage difficult, don’t spend more than 20 minutes on it. You can always return to the harder passages after completing the easier ones. Prioritize sections where you can find answers quickly.
7. Review Your Answers
If you have time at the end, review your answers to ensure you haven’t missed anything. Sometimes, your first instinct can be incorrect, so double-checking your work can help avoid unnecessary mistakes.
