When it comes to proving English proficiency for academic or professional purposes, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) are the two most recognized exams worldwide. But which one is right for you? In this blog, we’ll explore the key differences to help you make an informed decision.
1. Test Format
IELTS:
• Two types: Academic & General Training
• Sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
• Speaking test: Conducted face-to-face with an examiner
• Scoring: 0-9 band scale
TOEFL:
• Focus: Academic English
• Sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing
• Speaking test: Recorded responses assessed by AI and human raters
• Scoring: 0-120 scale
2. Test Duration
• IELTS: ~2 hours 45 minutes
• TOEFL: ~3 hours
3. Listening & Speaking Differences
IELTS Listening consists of different accents, including British, Australian, and American. TOEFL Listening mainly features American English.
IELTS Speaking is an in-person interview, testing real-life communication. TOEFL Speaking requires speaking into a microphone, with answers recorded and graded later.
4. Writing Style
• IELTS Writing includes task-based questions (e.g., describing a graph, writing an essay).
• TOEFL Writing requires integrated responses based on reading and listening materials.
5. Which Test is Easier?
It depends on your strengths:
• If you’re comfortable speaking face-to-face, IELTS may be better.
• If you prefer structured, academic writing, TOEFL might suit you more.
• If you’re used to American English, TOEFL may be easier. If you’re exposed to various accents, IELTS could be a better fit.
