When learning a new language, understanding sentence structure is key. In Persian (Farsi), word order is a little different from English, but it’s very consistent and logical. One of the first things to learn is the Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) structure.
Let’s break it down in a simple way.
1. Basic Persian Sentence Structure
In English, we usually say:
Subject + Verb + Object
I eat an apple.
But in Persian, we say:
Subject + Object + Verb
من یک سیب میخورم
(man yek seeb mikhoram)I an apple eat.
The verb always comes at the end of the sentence.
2. Let’s Look at More Examples
انگلیسی Persian Literal Translation She reads a book. او یک کتاب میخواند. She a book reads. We see the car. ما ماشین را میبینیم. We the car see. They want tea. آنها چای میخواهند. They tea want. See? The verb always comes last, and the object is in the middle.
3. What About Questions?
To ask simple yes/no questions, you just change your intonation (no need to switch word order):
Statement: تو قهوه دوست داری. (You like coffee.)
Question: تو قهوه دوست داری؟ (Do you like coffee?)For wh-questions, just add the question word at the beginning:
چی میخوری؟ → What are you eating?
کی میاد؟ → Who is coming?
4. Tips for Practice
Try translating short English sentences into Persian.
Always put the verb at the end.
Use simple verbs like “خوردن” (to eat), “دیدن” (to see), “داشتن” (to have).
Practice speaking or writing with this formula: Subject + Object + Verb.
5. Sentence Patterns You Can Try
من کتاب میخوانم. (I read a book.)
تو نامه مینویسی. (You write a letter.)
او آب مینوشد. (He/She drinks water.)
Each one follows the same Persian sentence structure. Easy, right?
